12/25/14.1 Bruges, Day 3 Christmas Day

We woke to pealing church bells and SUN. For the first time in the 9 days we've been in Belgium, there was a clear blue sky. Perfect for Christmas.

This is looking toward the market square from the front entrance of our hotel alley. The Koffiebuntje used to be a coffee house, hence its name, Coffeebean. Great location. Not quiet, especially as everything echoes off the stone walls and cobblestone street, but an easy walk to almost everwhere. And a full breakfast with smoked salmon, brie, great muesli cereal, decent coffee.

This is looking in the other direction from our hotel.

I loved this sign above the lacemaker's shop just down from our hotel.

We weren't sure what would be open on Christmas, so we just took off down a street we'd never walked before. Ended up in front of a government building with other tourists, including a lovely couple with a cute daughter, from Florida. The man works regularly in Holland and wanted to bring the rest of the famiy, so they are traveling over Christmas. To Belgium and a couple of other countries. They want to continue to travel with their children, trading that for Christmas presents. Lovely way to do Christmas, experiences instead of toys. They took a picture of us, but unfortunately we didn't get one of them.

We continued our Christmas wanderings, along with many others. Many shops were open, and part of the market. I took this picture because I loved the reflections of the buildings and sky in the water. It so reminds of many Flemish and English landscape paintings.

This reflection too, just gorgeous on this sunny day.

On the canal above, there was an open air market where artists had set up. I was taken with a lovely watercolor of a Bruges skyline. This is the artist who did it, Artis is his name. As he said, good name for an artist.

We saw this mug in one of the shops. Unfortunately it wasn't open, but that's what cameras are for, eh? Pefect sentiment for travel.
